Sheet Hydroforming for Better Finishes

Sheet hydroforming is the most cost-effective method to achieve smooth, blemish-free parts without the need for extra polishing processes. Some parts require superior exterior finishes; for example, medical devices and cookware. However, extra buffing and polishing can add to the cost of cold-forming processes and require more time to finish parts. Instead of adding an extra step to the process, Jones Metal Forming recommends sheet hydroforming.

The sheet hydroforming process is extremely efficient and precise. In sheet hydroforming, a press operates in place of the female die. The forming chamber contains pressurized liquid, which presses the punch through a metal ring to create the part. Unlike other cold-forming methods, the blank emerges virtually scratch-free because the female die used in the process is rubber. Because there is very little friction, part stretching and thin-out is minimized. Parts emerge from the chamber shiny and blemish-free.

Many times, parts that need superior surface finishes are also irregularly shaped. With other cold-forming processes, these requirements can be cumbersome to achieve. Sheet hydroforming, however, is the perfect solution to craft complex shapes in a single cycle. Also, because it doesn’t require extra tooling, sheet hydroforming is extremely cost-effective. In fact, it can be up to 50 percent more cost-effective than matched die tooling. Further, just because a part requires an aesthetic finish doesn’t mean that customers have to sacrifice durability. Sheet hydroforming produces parts that are structurally strong and durable without adding unnecessary weight.

Jones Metal Forming offers a variety of cold-forming capabilities in addition to sheet hydroforming. We are also the expert in deep-draw stamping, deep-draw hydroforming, aluminum heat treating and vacuum heat treating. The cold-forming method a company chooses should really be dependent on the size of the run, the desired application of the part and the intended shape, among other factors. Engineers at Jones Metal can work with customers to help them determine the most efficient and cost-effective solution for their needs. Jones Metal also understands the unique and complex needs of companies in a variety of industries, from defense to automotive to medical to commercial lighting.
