Flying High with Heat Treatment Certifications

In the world of manufacturing, some of the most stringent standards are those applied to creating aerospace components. After all, the cost of failure is too high if specifications aren’t met. So when an aerospace manufacturer extends its stamp of approval to your work, you know you’ve reached a high degree of excellence.

Over our more than 95 years in business at Jones Metal Products Company, we’ve built up a steady stream of work from aerospace manufacturers because we have the ability to deliver both precisely formed metal components and heat treatment services to strengthen those components. In fact, Jones Metal Products Company is often called upon by Federal Aviation Administration-certified (FAA) air repair stations to form and heat treat components such as panels, frame parts, nose cones or replacement parts for older aircraft that are no longer in production, but still in operation.

Recently, the Cessna Aircraft Company awarded us approval certification for aluminum heat treating. This follows approvals for aluminum heat treating from Goodrich, Gentz, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell Grimes, Parker Hannifin, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls Royce. Vacuum heat treating approvals include Rolls Royce, Arde, Birkshire, Barnes, Goodrich, Honeywell Grimes, and Doncaster (Meco and GCE).

The importance of effective heat treatment in aerospace is difficult to overstate. It is a process by which heat or cold is applied to alter the metallurgical properties of a finished component. Not only can this process strengthen the metal, but it can also make it easier to machine and finish, improve its formability or restore ductility. Without heat treatment, the critical hardening, softening or stress relieving of metal components without any change to the component’s shape couldn’t take place.

Effective heat treatment requires more than just the application of heat or cold to metal, though. It is as much art as it is science and requires both years of experience and deep metallurgical knowledge to effectively treat metals to the high standards that many companies in the aerospace industry require.

At Jones Metal, we specialize in both aluminum heat treating and vacuum heat treating. With vacuum heat treating, we offer annealing, hardening, solution treating, stress relieving and tempering of parts made from steel, brass, bronze, copper, and titanium alloys. Vacuum heat treating  burns off a fine layer of surface material so that parts are not discolored or contaminated by oxidation.  This is important in meeting specifications for a bright surface finish, minimal distortion, and uniform thermal treatment.

With aluminum heat treatment services, hardening, softening and stress relieving  are  accomplished with aging, air quenching, hot and cold water quenching, glycol quenching, partial and full annealing . Wrought aluminum sheets, plates, parts, some forgings, and investment castings benefit from aluminum heat treating.

Whether you need one or 100 components for either new or existing aerospace equipment, Jones Metal has the capabilities, experience and certifications to help. Learn more about our aerospace heat treatment services by contacting us or calling today at 888-868-6536.
